The digitization of the advanced manufacturing industry is transforming the way products are designed, developed and serviced, as well as revolutionizing the setup of industrial operations, processes and management of supply-chains. The benefit of integrating digital technologies - such as the industrial internet of things, robotics, automation, data analytics and cloud computing - is driving down production costs, rapidly increasing productivity and profits.
However, while plans to enhance digital capabilities throughout manufacturing and supply chain; it also brings new cyber risks for which many in the industry is unprepared. When supply chains, factories, customers, and operations are connected, the risks posed by cyber threats are increased and potentially damaging to production and profit. Consequently, manufacturers need to evaluate how to address cyber risk and cyber security should be an integral part of any digital transformation. In fact, manufacturers need to consider the design and engineer security into machines and architecture from the start to make sure they are not introducing security flaws into new digital and legacy systems or providing a ‘back door’ into the wider eco-system.
